METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing chewing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it hasn’t penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to get it off by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a workable substance compared to a gooey and stringy mess. Once that happens, we slide a putty knife or scraper under the gum. Then we slide the scraper slowly under the gum and the whole piece should then peel right off of the concrete.

The above process is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove chewing gum that is already black, or is smashed down into the concrete, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we do not use very high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses more pressure than needed to clean commercial concrete. These types of surfaces can be destroyed much easier than people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our chewing gum removal service.
